Talcum
From its inception in spring 2004 (unclutter.el) on, a collection of the most useful tools for LaTeX editing in Emacs. The first extension to bring a WYSIWYM feeling to Emacs by hiding markup commands, labels, refs, etc. The only extension for Emacs to support automatic reload of files after compiling, some-chapters-only compilation, hierarchical minibuffer completion, simplified command definition, and selection of equation labels by their output numbers.(Binary-only/no modification/no distribution: putting the hurdle higher so the some folks maybe, just maybe repair their shit before borging other people's code into their amorphous code m[ae]ss.)

It might or might not work well for you: there's more workarounds for Emacs bugs in there than I care to remember.
